Another heatwave
Almost every year in the UK the country experiences a heatwave. And although most of the time there is little to no build up to it, it’s to be expected because we get one every year. Yet every year us Brits are notoriously unprepared for it!
I remember a few years back frantically searching the shops at 4:30pm on a Tuesday trying to buy a fan, yet every shop was sold out. I was not prepared and you know how the saying goes “By failing to prepare, you are preparing to fail.” Anyway.. We experienced a few days last week of absolutely scorching weather and since the vast majority of us are stuck working from home with little to nothing open in the outside world our homes were like green houses. Unless we prepared that is! A few years back a friend of mine told me how he’d bought a small Air conditioning unit to keep him and his family cool during a heatwave. He said that even though he had a fan on in every room, at night their home was like an oven. And to add to the stress they had a new baby to think about too. He realised enough was enough and he bought the air con unit and within minutes he knew it was a worthwhile investment he only wished he got one sooner.
So why am I telling you this story? Well, it reminds me of the Hiring managers in the Technology space I speak to…. They realise they have a skill shortage in their team, they notice their numbers are dropping, their targets not being met, the business underperforming and they panic. They go out and they hire another C-level professional or Director asap. Not looking at why this has happened, what the gap is in their team or coming up with a clear job specification… They just hire. Just like my friend would have done if he bought another fan instead of his air conditioning unit. Although fans are adequate it won’t give you the results air conditioning will. My friend knew this, because he was smart. Be a smart Hiring manager and look closely at your team before hiring. Follow a process and stick to it. While you’re here…
