A friend of mine reminded me of an important lesson in hiring the other day… She told me how she’d recently got a sports injury while she was out for a run.
She is pretty fit so I knew it must’ve been quite bad when she said she was in agony and had booked an appointment to get it looked at. Her GP told her it was her knee and referred her to a knee specialist. But he warned her that she may be waiting a long time for an appointment right now. Then my friend said something that made me think… She said, “It’s annoying but it’s better to see a specialist, someone who knows what they’re talking about, you know?” I couldn’t agree more. Using a specialist is the only way to know you’re getting someone who knows what they’re talking about. Yet so many Hiring managers in the Technology space don’t do it. Instead, they go for a generalist. Someone with no real industry knowledge, no connections and no track record of hiring top performers in the Technology space. And then they hire Directors and C-level Executives that are not the right fit and end up having to go through the hiring process all over again.
All the while, working late and picking up the workload of others due to the skill shortage in their team.
